The playground is showing significant wear and more importantly, no longer meets playground safety codes and requirements set forth by the Department of Child and Family Services, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the American Disabilities Act.

In addition to complying with these logistical improvements, making it a safer area for our children, it is also our goal to expand the learning opportunities available by providing several age-appropriate spaces and stimulating physical, cognitive, and cultural activities.

This event is intended to continue the fundraising efforts for this expansive project. The first annual Playground FUNdraiser raised more than $30,000, but we have more than $100,000 left to go to meet our goal and to make the full scope of the project a reality. Though this goal is significant, we believe that with help from a variety of sources, including our generous community, we will achieve success and soon take pleasure in the smiles on the faces of our children as they enjoy this new space!

Tickets: $10 Adults; $5 Seniors (60+) and Students (13-18); Children 12/under FREE

Tickets available in the church or daycare offices or by calling.

Maureen's Story:

"On July 9, 2012, I received the shocking diagnosis of AML (acute myeloid leukemia), which is a very aggressive blood cancer. I began intensive chemotherapy immediately and knew that my greatest chance of survival was to receive a stem cell transplant. Marrow transplants tend to have greater success when matched with a sibling, but unfortunately, neither my brother nor my sister were matches when they got tested. Like 70% of all patients needing a marrow transplant, I needed to find an unrelated donor. My doctors turned to Be The Match. Out of 19 million people, they found two perfect matches for me who were both willing to become donors for me! I received a stem cell transplant from an unrelated donor on November 13, 2012.

I was very lucky. There are thousands waiting for marrow transplants. Many of them are children. Be The Match is not looking for a cure. They have a cure.

In an effort to give back and help Be The Match save more lives, I've been advocating for them and am hosting this marrow donor drive.

Please join the registry by submitting a mouth swab. It's painless and easy. You could save a life!"

Are you healthy and between the ages of 18 and 44? Patients need you! For thousands with blood cancers like leukemia or other diseases like sickle cell anemia, a marrow transplant is their only hope for life. Please join the marrow donor registry by submitting a swab of the inside of your mouth.

You could be the match that someone is looking for! You could save a life!

The 12th Annual Mark Linder Walk for the Mind

Named for Mark Linder, a Peoria native who was in his twenties when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor, Mark’s goal was to create a place where brain tumor survivors and those still fighting the battle could support one another. In 2003, Mark founded the Walk for the Mind to help raise money for brain tumor research in hopes of finding a cure. While Mark died in 2005, at age 31, the walk lives on and since then has raised more than $380,000 for brain tumor research. The Walk has grown from 150 participants in 2003, to 750 people last year.

Dr. Patrick Elwood, “the central Illinois father of neurosurgery,” was named to be the honorary chair at the 2014 Mark Linder Walk for the Mind.

Dr. Elwood, a Peoria native whose career has spanned more than 50 years, was the driving force in the developing and advancing neurological services in the Peoria area, including establishing the neurosurgery residency in Peoria. He’s a prominent neurosurgeon, scholar, mentor, and known by many patients as a lifesaver.

“Many will remember Dr. Elwood for having done the surgery on their friend or family member” said the Walk’s organizer, Peggy Flannigan, who noted Dr. Elwood likely has performed the most brain tumor surgeries than any other surgeon historically in the Peoria area. “Having Dr. Elwood as the honorary chair will have a personal meaning to a lot of people.”

To register for the Walk or for more information, visit the website!

This is the third year all net proceeds will be donated to the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria for brain cancer research. Last year’s Walk generated a record $50,000 for research.
