The 12th Annual Mark Linder Walk for the Mind

Named for Mark Linder, a Peoria native who was in his twenties when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor, Mark’s goal was to create a place where brain tumor survivors and those still fighting the battle could support one another. In 2003, Mark founded the Walk for the Mind to help raise money for brain tumor research in hopes of finding a cure. While Mark died in 2005, at age 31, the walk lives on and since then has raised more than $380,000 for brain tumor research. The Walk has grown from 150 participants in 2003, to 750 people last year.

Dr. Patrick Elwood, “the central Illinois father of neurosurgery,” was named to be the honorary chair at the 2014 Mark Linder Walk for the Mind.

Dr. Elwood, a Peoria native whose career has spanned more than 50 years, was the driving force in the developing and advancing neurological services in the Peoria area, including establishing the neurosurgery residency in Peoria. He’s a prominent neurosurgeon, scholar, mentor, and known by many patients as a lifesaver.

“Many will remember Dr. Elwood for having done the surgery on their friend or family member” said the Walk’s organizer, Peggy Flannigan, who noted Dr. Elwood likely has performed the most brain tumor surgeries than any other surgeon historically in the Peoria area. “Having Dr. Elwood as the honorary chair will have a personal meaning to a lot of people.”

To register for the Walk or for more information, visit the website!

This is the third year all net proceeds will be donated to the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria for brain cancer research. Last year’s Walk generated a record $50,000 for research.

In honor of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month in October, the 10th Annual Share “Walk for Remembrance & Hope” is scheduled for Saturday, October 4th, 2014.  This event will kick off at the Peoria RiverPlex along the beautiful Peoria Riverfront.  A memorial service and a one-mile walk are scheduled to allow parents, friends and families the opportunity to honor, love and remember their babies

Check-in and registration will be outside the Peoria RiverPlex from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. along the riverfront walk.  A memorial service honoring our babies will begin at 10:45 a.m.  Babies’ names will be read aloud and a balloon release will follow to honor these babies. There will be musical performances. The walk will begin at approximately 11:15 a.m. along the riverfront walk. Refreshments will be provided.   Registration is $20 for adults and $10 for children 6-12 years old and $5 age 5 and under.  Walk registration brochures can be downloaded from www.peoriasharewalk.com or you can call 309-370-4801.

1 out of 4 babies will die due to pregnancy loss, stillbirth, or infant death.  This means that your friends, neighbors and loved ones may have experienced the tragic death of a baby.  The heartache and grief is indescribable, but together we can continue to provide support, awareness and collaborative research.

The mission of Share Pregnancy & Infant Loss Support, Inc. is to serve those who are touched by the tragic death of a baby through pregnancy loss, stillbirth or in the first few months of life.  The primary purpose is to provide support toward positive resolution of grief experienced at the time of or following the death of a baby.  This support encompasses emotional, physical, spiritual and social healing as well as an effort to help sustain the family unit.  The funds raised will help provide gowns for the babies, stuffed animals to the bereaved families, as well as help fund the local Share support group.

A Walk to Remember (Sat. Oct 4, 2014 10:00 am)

A Walk to Remember honors babies who have died due to pregnancy loss, stillbirth, or infant death.

This year’s A Walk to Remember will be held at the Washington Park playground picnic shelter. The Springfield Walk takes place in October, which is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month, and commemorates the lives of babies lost due to miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant death. Proceeds from the Walk benefit Share Pregnancy and Infant Loss, Inc. (started in Springfield, Illinois) and the Springfield Angel of Hope, NFP.

Parents, families, and friends are invited to walk in memory of their child or children. A memorial ceremony precedes the approximate two-mile walk, during which parents may place a pinwheel lawn ornament in a memorial “garden” when their baby’s name(s) is read. A balloon release ends the ceremony. The ceremony is designed to remember each life, no matter how long or short.

By gathering together to walk for babies gone but not forgotten, A Walk to Remember keeps their memories alive and offers support to grieving parents, families, and friends. Whether marking a recent loss, or one that occurred several years ago, parents, families, and friends are encouraged to come walk for the steps their babies will never take.

Participants may register the day of the Walk, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Cost to participate in the Walk is $10, which includes a pinwheel lawn ornament and a program. T-shirts with the commemorated babies’ names listed on the back may be purchased for an additional $10 each.

The first Springfield A Walk to Remember was held at the Washington Park picnic shelter in October 2001. Since then, the Walk has continued to provide support for grieving families as it recognizes the babies they hold so dear to their hearts.
