Community Bible Study (CBS) Peoria Evening Class invites you to study the Gospel of Matthew!

This is a 30-week study for men, women and children of every denomination and every level of understanding. CBS's goal is to make disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ in our communities through caring, in-depth Bible study, available to all. CBS's format is opening in worship, core group discussion and lecture.

Matthew wrote by the power of the Holy Spirit, primarily to his fellow Jews, proving through scripture that Jesus's life and ministry fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah.

CBS meets weekly on Thursday nights.

The next film from director Dallas Jenkins (who as a youth detasseled corn in the Peoria area!), is the first effort from Vertical Church Films (Harvest Bible Chapel).

Gavin Stone is a burnt out former child star whose latest party earns him 200 hours of community service at a local church. His mop is traded in for the lead role in the Passion play as he learns about church, second chances, and forgiveness in the biggest role of his career. It's probably the first Christian "romantic comedy" that I enjoyed for both the romantic and the comedy.

TV and entertainment fans will recognize actors from Agents of SHIELD, The Middle... and perhaps most surprising, professional wrestling (The WWE actually owns the film!).

Dinner is buffet or whatever your choose to order from the menu. The buffet with a drink costs $13.01.

We'll be eating dinner until 6:30 or so, but this last Friday there was no line at 5pm, and a line out the door by 5:40. During/after dinner we hope to share trailers and discussion of other upcoming Christian films - we need 20-25 or so to have a private room to do this. At 6:30-6:45 we'll head to theaters to watch the film.

In Peoria it is playing at both Grand Prairie 18 and Landmark, times have not yet been announced.

***NOTE:  If you can't make it to dinner or even the film on January 20, this is a regular full run of the film, with multiple showtimes daily until at least the next Thursday.

Annual all-day Sacred Harp singing

Sacred Harp, a form of shape note singing, is early American, a capella religious music. Singers sit according to vocal parts, facing each other to form a hollow square. It is passionate, spirited music, not for performance but sung by people who like to meet together to sing.

Come for a few songs or stay all day. Loaner books available.

The traditional "dinner on the grounds" will be shared at noon. If you can't bring a dish, come anyway- we've never run low on food!

For more info, the Web site listed above gives background, links, and details of singings throughout the US. Search YouTube for clips of singings.

Contact Mark at the number above with questions.

It is Sacred Harp custom to welcome new singers warmly. It's a great time to give this old tradition a try.

Physician and Filmmaker Delaney Ruston decided to make SCREENAGERS when she found herself constantly struggling with her two kids about screen time. Ruston felt guilty and confused, not sure what limits were best, especially around mobile phones, social media, gaming, and how to monitor online homework. Hearing repeatedly how other parents were equally overwhelmed, she realized this is one of the biggest, unexplored parenting issues of our time.

Director Ruston turned the camera on her own family and others—revealing stories that depict messy struggles over social media, video games, academics, and internet addiction.  Examples of stories include Hannah’s, an 14-year-old victim of social media bullying that stemmed from her trying to hide her use of social media from her mom. Issues are different for boys and girls, and the film also follows Andrew’s story, a straight-A student whose love of video games spins out of control when he goes off to college and lands in an internet rehab center. Interwoven into these stories are cutting-edge science and insights from thought leaders such as Peggy Orenstein, Sherry Turkle, and Simon Sinek, as well as leading brain scientists who present evidence on real changes happening in the brain.

SCREENAGERS goes far beyond exposing the risks of screen time but reveals multiple approaches on how parents and educators can work with kids to help them achieve a healthy amount of screen time.

SCREENAGERS is blazing a new model of distribution, known as a community viewing model, in hopes that parents and educators can start a conversation nationwide about how screen time impacts our lives.  As part of the community viewing model, parents, educators, PTAs, and workplace groups can book at screenagersmovie.com.  Screenings can be booked on an event-by-event basis, and parents are encouraged to bring their kids to the movie.
